Here we go....

Drudge has a scoop on a Kerry infidelity. Personally speaking, I find the Clark quote in the article pretty far-fetched. But I think it's unlikely Drudge would put his rep on the line if the mainstream media wasn't really investigating this story as he claims.

I think Teresa Heinz is pretty damn sexy for an older woman, and Kerry with a 23-year old seems pretty difficult to imagine, so don't count me among the believers. Seems counterintuitive for the moment.

UPDATE: Interesting discussion going on over at The Corner. The fallout from all this according to one commentator---it clears the way for Hillary!

Sigh.

Wouldn't that lead Clark to stay in the race longer if he really thought Kerry would implode? Either way, if it's true, I hope it comes out quickly. Kerry has had almost no tests during the primary thanks to the accelerated schedule this year. I wouldn't mind seeing how he handles scandals or heavy criticism before he's the Democratic nominee, not after.

From this morning's Idaho Statesman:

[Mrs. Heinz-Kerry] has a reputation for bluntness bordering on recklessness for a prospective first lady. She´s spoken of her prenuptial agreement, Botox treatments and Kerry´s middle-of-the-night Vietnam flashbacks, and made a gunshot sound when asked how she would respond to infidelity. Becoming first lady, she once said, would be “worse than going to a Carmelite convent.”

Tomorrow's headline:
John Kerry Shot in Testicles; Wife Sought for Questioning

Now that would be a story.

hahaha... Oh man...

Man. It's really amazing to see how obsessed many GOPers are with Hillary. I guess without Bill in office, they use her as a surrogate for their venting.

In case you haven't been following the story it seems there is good reason to believe that Chris Lehane was likely behind this: "FROM CONGRESSIONAL QUARTERLY'S CRAIG CRAWFORD: "Drudge item on Kerry intern issue is something Chris Lehane (Clark press secy) has shopped around for a long time -- it was one reason the Gore vetters in 2000 shied away from Kerry as a running mate choice -- their conclusion that it wasn't bad enough to disqualify him, except for the fact that they couldn't risk it as they were trying so hard to distance themselves from Clinton's personal failings (note: Lehane worked for Gore at the time -- and briefly advised Kerry during this campaign). The Kerry camp has long expected to deal with this, and have assured party leaders they can handle it."

Well, apparently certain journalists have been looking into the story for weeks now. Besides, wouldn't screwing Kerry impede Lehane's future career goals, unless he intends to switch parties?

Nevertheless, it certainly is odd that this story came out right after Clark dropped out.

Kos has more.....

Yeah I guess the Lehane accusation is not such a sure thing. Hesiod says "No. It was Bush. And we know it was Bush for the simple reason that the President was having a very, very bad week with this whole AWOL thing." I don't know about all that but I certainly don't have illusions about Rove and it does work out well for Bush. But if it works too well Bush may end up facing Edwards who I think has a better chance than Kerry of defeating.

So now Clark is endorsing Kerry? And denies that he predicted that Kerry would "implode over an intern"? Crazy. Kerry is set to respond to the media probe this morning.

Wonder if his scrotum is still intact.

Daily Kos says he got independent verification that Clark made the remark. I'd say he's pretty trustworthy and certainly has no special wish to corroborate a Drudge story. So what's up with the Clark endorsement? Truly bizarre. Except I kind of got the impression during his campaign that Clark really is kind of space cadet. Maybe he really thought he could say that stuff off the record and nothing would come of it.

Posted by: piraeus at February 13, 2004 01:04 AM

I agree that Kos' confirmation pretty much verifies the statement for me. Could it be that Clark's remarks actually set the story in motion? In that case, some are arguing that endorsing now is a way for Clark to make up with Kerry.

Posted by: Scott at February 13, 2004 05:41 AM

Yeah, maybe he's just trying to make nice and be the VP? Who knows? Clark was certainly one of the wackier candidates. Good resume, horrible campaigner. I don't know if he felt forced into proving his Democratic credentials, which might explain why he kept up with the conspiracy theories and such, but still.. sheesh.. ah well. It's better for Edwards now that he's out. I just hope it's not too late for a real challenge against Kerry.

A blogger, who is apparently also a Clark staffer, leaked the rumor on Feb. 6. So I think it's safe to say that the Clark campaign knew this was coming, and folded anyway, which is clearly good for Kerry.

Posted by: Scott at February 13, 2004 10:03 AM

Well, if this is true and he survives, it'll be good for the Dems since it'll actually test Kerry.

Btw, latest poll shows Kerry beating Bush by 10 pts.

Guys, guys, guys.

The Kerry intern has been found.

Heh. That's some mighty fine blogwhoring there. :)

But, of course, I've decided to take your humorously-intended post seriously. If he slept with an intern between marriages, who cares?

Still, funny and all.. :)
