Ken Jennings, Jeopardy Player Extraordinaire

I blogged a little about this about a couple of weeks ago and guess what? Ken Jennings is still winning. He's now won 22 days straight and should break $700,000 today.

UPDATE: For those of you discovering our site via Yahoo and other search engines, I will be posting a tribute article to Ken once he's finally done winning. Make sure to come back then and check it out. Also, please spend some time browsing some of our other posts to see if you find anything that interests you. We'd love to have you as regular readers. Thanks.

Amazing. I haven't been able to see any of the episodes because they run while I'm at work. How long has it been the rule that contestants play until they lose? Not long, I don't think. I wonder how many five-game winners from before the rule change think they could have done the same thing.

Posted by: David at July 1, 2004 03:24 PM

It was introduced either this year or last year. I'm not sure. I've never seen any contestants as good as Ken, though. Only one person has seriously challenged him the whole time he's been playing that I've seen. I know it's unlikely, but I could see him playing the rest of the season. I sure as hell would hate to be any of the contestants going up against him. Almost none of them have any chance whatsoever.

Posted by: mallarme at July 1, 2004 03:29 PM

Have you been able to watch the shows? I wonder if ABC or GSN is rerunning these--I would like to see him in action. Incidentally, the Jeopardy! website does not have Jennings' records listed yet; presumably because they expect him to keep going.

Posted by: David at July 1, 2004 03:48 PM

Yeah, I've watched probably half his shows so far. I'm usually home in time. I noticed the records thing as well. The only one he hasn't broken yet is single-day total, although he's been within $3000 of it. Alex was trying to get him to wager enough in final Jeopardy to break it yesterday, but he would have risked losing if he got the question wrong. I wonder if he'll just retire undefeated after he reaches a million.

Posted by: mallarme at July 1, 2004 03:55 PM

Well, he won again. He's now at around $737,000.

Posted by: mallarme at July 1, 2004 05:30 PM

Darn! I missed the July 2nd show of Jeopardy. How did Ken Jennings do?

Posted by: Brenda at July 3, 2004 05:34 AM

He didn't do quite as well as he has been, but he still won. Only had about $17,000 at the end though.

Posted by: mallarme at July 3, 2004 09:33 AM

I ran across this chat...can anyone tell me if he won tonight? I had to work and missed it. Thanks

Posted by: Stella Keeffe at July 5, 2004 06:53 PM

He did, but only with $19,000. His last two performances he's been getting a lot more answers wrong than usual. I wonder if he's getting tired.

Posted by: mallarme at July 5, 2004 07:18 PM

Thanks. Yeah, I've been noticing his drop-off too. Well...it has to end sometime.

Posted by: Stella at July 6, 2004 12:07 AM

Nothing against Ken but the show just isn't interesting to me when there's no real contest. For a few weeks, I was tuning in each evening just to see if he was still there--and then changing channels to watch Seinfeld re-runs. Then a couple of nights ago I read an online piece suggesting Ken is actually a robot (this really cracked me up) AND saying that the shows are taped way in advance and Ken is back home in Utah so obviously he loses at some point. Now I'm watching because I don't want to miss the night that he finally loses.

Posted by: Alex at July 6, 2004 09:33 PM

So did anyone see the episode where, after the break, Ken revealed that his good luck charm is a Totoro doll? It's official, he can't lose. He's channelling the awesome power of Studio Ghibli. :)

Posted by: Jacoby at July 6, 2004 09:53 PM

The last two days he hasn't done very well (comparatively), but there have also only been him and one other person in final Jeopardy. Strange... if he were a robot, it would explain a lot though.

Posted by: mallarme at July 6, 2004 10:31 PM

I read a Washington Post article on the internet just now that says that Ken Jennings "Jeopardy" winning streak is already over and he is back in Utah and that these shows were taped in February. Ken is refusing to comment on the circumstances relating to his departure from the show. I can't imagined who could finally beat him or does he make an agreement to resign as the undisputed chamption. Must keep watching!!!

Posted by: Pauline at July 7, 2004 10:36 AM

Well, he won again, and with $40,000 today, so any ideas about his burning out are wrong. Over $800,000 now.

Posted by: Karl at July 7, 2004 06:47 PM

If you're gonna post a spoiler, let us know! We see Jeopardy later in Cleveland than some others. You already told me that he wins, taking the suspense out of it. Anyway, I predict he throws the game when he gets over $1 million.

Posted by: Ken B at July 7, 2004 06:51 PM

I'm soooooooo tired of Ken. He's way too shiny.

It's just a little wee bit odd how quick he is on the button.

Anyway, I'm boycotting the show. I love Jeopardy......hate the 'Ken Show'.

Posted by: tam at July 7, 2004 07:03 PM

And the backlash begins...

I've wondered a few times if he doesn't just resign after he hits the million dollar mark. Stupid confidentiality agreements... I guess we'll just have to keep watching and see.

Posted by: mallarme at July 7, 2004 07:10 PM

As re spoilers: I agree. I live in CA and I think we're the last ones in the nation to see Jeopardy each night.

Posted by: Alex at July 7, 2004 07:20 PM

Go Ken. He is smart, fast, and cheerful. We started calling it the "Ken & Alex show" weeks ago. Ken does not appear to be gloating. Just a good guy who is well prepared. We should all be this well prepared for our future endevors.

Posted by: Julie at July 7, 2004 08:47 PM

Before you get too excited, be aware that Kenny is a Mormon -

http://www.robichaux.net/archives/000836.php

I'm just waiting for him to trip up on some question about aliens and the afterlife.

Posted by: sleepnotwork at July 8, 2004 09:34 AM

I do not understand why Ken did not bet enough on Friday, July 9, 2004, to beat the record being held for the most money won in a single episode. He only bet enough to TIE it!! What is with that? I too am getting tired of watching Ken win every night, but now I watch because I want to see the individual that will beat him!

Posted by: Edie at July 10, 2004 08:26 PM

What a great accomplishment! What does skinny, looks or any of that have to do with brains? He remembers more than I've ever forgotten. I hope he wins forever!

Posted by: Marilyn at July 11, 2004 12:27 AM

What exactly does that mean - "be aware" that he is a mormon????? Aliens and afterlife - what does that have to do with anything. You make me laugh in your ignorance and bias. What a joke.

Posted by: Machelle at July 12, 2004 12:30 PM

He's still winning. He's now been there 29 days and has won over $972,000. He should break the million dollar mark today, July 13.

Posted by: Tammy at July 13, 2004 11:47 AM

Dear sweet Machelle. Are you a Mormon? Or maybe you have Mormon friends? As a member of the Latter-Day Saints, a believer in the restoration of Zion on the North American continent, and a lifelong scholar of the Book, I can tell you two things definitively:

One, "sleepnotwork" is an idiot. Don't be insulted by the ignorance of others.

Two, if there were a Jeopardy question on spaceships, Ken would answer correctly because he is probably a pilot. We select the smartest among us to train on replica spaceships should the need arise. Because Ken is clearly an intelligent person, he has probably logged hundreds of hours in one of our high-tech barns.

Posted by: Shawn Bradley at July 13, 2004 12:06 PM

For the record, I have nothing against Mormons. I find them highly entertaining.

Posted by: sleepnotwork at July 13, 2004 02:47 PM

his knowledge couldnt possibly cover the spectrum that he is able to answer. the show is becoming reminisant of the $64,000 Question. the fix is in.

Posted by: God at July 13, 2004 09:28 PM

The only good part about this show is that after feeding the church 10%, and taking taxes out of his winnings, there will only be just enough money left to buy a fifteen passenger van and another wife whom he will have no idea how to please.

Posted by: Zach at July 13, 2004 09:32 PM

One Million Dollars.

I don't think this is fixed at all. Trebek occasionally looks frustrated at Jennings' win streak and is clearly pretty tired of having to banter with him during and after the shows. I don't think Jeopardy would put on such a gigantic fix anyway, especially right after the rule change.

Posted by: David at July 14, 2004 10:28 AM

Hey! Does anyone know Ken's E-mail? If you do, please post it here.

Posted by: Amy at July 14, 2004 12:08 PM

Golddigger?

Posted by: David at July 14, 2004 12:37 PM

Bwhahaha... I'd be surprised to find his email address online. He'd probably be a pretty scary penpal though.

Posted by: mallarme at July 14, 2004 12:43 PM

i'm looking for pictures online of the blue screen where ken writes his name--if anyone knows where i can find some, please email me and let me know? thanks!

Only the first one has a picture of the screen in it, though. You could crop the image to just show the screen pretty easily.

Ken hit the front page of the Ottawa Citizen to-day, one of Canada's national newspapers & is wife's parents are from Ottawa but prefer to remain anonymous. BTW, there is always a Canada question on Jeopardy (thanks Alex) & Ken has refrained from setting the record of highest amt. by not bidding $1.oo over, twice. He's the thinking person's Survivor. Go Ken.

Posted by: Maryann at July 14, 2004 05:13 PM

Thanks whoever's site this is for this Ken mb. One theory is that Ken doesn't lose, but that there are enough segments to fill the schedule, so he may go on, and on, and on....

Posted by: Maryann at July 14, 2004 05:25 PM

Does anyone know what the final jeopardy question on july 13th was? PLease email me if you know. Anmitchell@adelphia.net

Posted by: Aaron at July 15, 2004 12:47 AM

He did it again..32nd today! He is producing two poor supporting actors and actresses every day.

Posted by: mkprince at July 15, 2004 12:17 PM

Ugh! Another Spoiler! I don't get to see them here til 7:30 PM EST. lol. Anyway, I'm not surprised. After he broke a million I figured he'd quit, but he's still going. 2 million? that would be something :) I like it. I think he's a nice guy who knows a lot. And for the record, I've got Mormon friends. They're no stranger than the rest of us. Good people :) Go Ken

Posted by: Robert at July 15, 2004 02:46 PM

It's great to see brains & modesty winning big money for a change & nd I think he doesn't want to claim another Jeopardy record by claiming the day's total as well & and he's giving money to PBS. Jeopardy ratings are up 30%so hopefully the TV viewing public will realize that there's merit in watching excellence. Way to go KEN!!!

Posted by: Maryann at July 15, 2004 05:48 PM

Ken is a great person, he is born with this gift.
I really enjoy looking at the game when he plays.
Actually I never used to look at Jeopardy as often as I look at it now.
Way to go ken go until the end

PS there will be no end.

Our local newspaper printed an article about a couple who attended the tapings of the 42nd and 43rd Jeopardy shows and guess who was still there?

Posted by: susie at July 16, 2004 02:46 PM

Ken is the perfect reason why human cloning is needed:)

Hello all. I hope you all will forgive me for entering your sight and posting this message but many of you seem to be ravid 'Jeopardy' fans as is my mom, so in order to provide loyal watchers of the game show some 'inside info'as to when Ken Jennings will finally lose just email me at this address , rkm14 @aol.com and I'll let you in on the well guarded secret. Now I'm sure your next question is'What does this jerk take us for, idiots, let me tell you another inside scoop. I have worked at WABC-TV here in New York City for close to 27 years and my station also carries Jeopardy nightly. It has been the long standing practice in television to tape in advance for any unforeseen event and also to allow members connected with the show maximum free time to persue other career opportunities. Not only to tape in advance, but for convenience reasons an entire week of shows, 5, are taped in 2 days. The usual schedule being 2 shows will be taped on tuesday and the next day 3. Same audience, Alex merely gets a 45 minute break in between each show taping for a meal, suit change etc. These Ken Jennings appearences were taped back in February of this year. So, while it may seem to be happening right before your eyes, including Ken appearences on all the morning shows, David Letterman etc. this is the normal practice when something extra special happens on a game show or other talk type programand it all leads to freee advertisement, more and new viewers to the show, and down the line that adds to more money in Merv Griffins' pockets as the shows creator ... and I mustn't omit his second weekly pay check for being the composer of the Jeopardy theme. And everytime you hear that theme, or the final jeopardy'think' music which he also wrote, Merv gets a check. Just what the blimp needs ..more cash, lol. ... Anyway, thank you for being good people, for allowing me to invade your space here in cyber world, and just email me if you want to know when he loses and any other tv related question you might want to know . God Bless! ROB.

Posted by: ROB MC at July 17, 2004 04:50 PM

The taping for the Jeopardy season is over and that may be why Jennings is at home now. He may finish off as the season champion and return next fall.

Posted by: Tony at July 19, 2004 03:02 PM

For such a smart trivial man, Ken is an idiot for falling into the brainwashing cult that is Moronism...excuse me..mormonism. Let me see.., yeah, I think a religion that is only 140 years old seems like a great idea..
Joseph Smith was the David Koresh of the 19th century. Polygamy, racism were founding cornerstones...Ken, I hope you die of slow stomach cancer.

Posted by: Kingpin at July 19, 2004 05:18 PM

does he win tonight? spoil me please....

Posted by: annie at July 19, 2004 06:28 PM

I think it is perfectly amazing and a bit ridiculous that there are so many comments (snarky or otherwise) regarding Ken's religious affiliation. Who cares? What does it have to do with his Jeopardy run? Would it matter if Ken was Buddhist or Jewish or Catholic or Protestant? Would the media mention it? Probably not. Leave the man's faith alone and start focusing on his accomplishments on the gameshow.

Posted by: Dee at July 20, 2004 01:31 PM

Jeopardy is not pulling a "Quiz Show" debacle here... too risky as feds would intervene quickly. Jeopardy producers only ONCE got caught up in a "Catch-22" situation when a mobster's friend wanted to win on the show. After complying for a while they stealthfully got rid of him by making the questions harder and harder for him. His button was obviously rigged and questions were geared towards dim-witted sports jocks. It was painful to watch this idiot win against brainiacs who did not know sports.

IMO Ken Jennings is not really that smart... He is supposedly using a secret religious alliance with his religion's supraluminal messenger (i.e. John Smith's so called angel Moroni). IMO That's why the CLDS (Church of the Later Day Saints - aka Mormons) eldership have not excommunicated or otherwise DEALT with him for using a pagan Japanese (i.e. Shintoist) "forest spirit" good luck charm as his secret "smart fix". IMO He is probably secretly giving all thanks to his "Moroni" while telling everyone else (i.e. Alex Trebek) that it is a Tortoro charm doll to throw everyone "off the scent" - as it were. Notice that he is adhering to Mormon "tithing" which indicate$ he is in real good standing with them!

IMHO the CLDS elders are looking at him like he is some "later day Solomon" who asked God for wisdom and got it. However, as history proved out, Solomon turned out to be a disloyal turn-coat or apostate.

Notice that Luciferians have been recently supplementing their income or funding their so-called "big-move" largely through winning (everytime w/o fail) at state lotteries! To me Moroni or Tortoro it's all from the same diabolic source! I wonder what secret metaphysical shenangins CLDS are up to here???

Spooky

IMO is "in my opinion"
IMHO is "in my humble opinion"

I said John Smith when I meant Joesph Smith... sorry!

Posted by: Spooky at July 21, 2004 10:22 PM

Oh and I want to add one more forensic evidentiary point against Ken Jennings bein a "born" genius:

1) If you were this smart, would you be working in IT (information technology - computers) clearly $65-$80k a year???

2) Couldn't he take that supposed genius and exploit it in other money making venues?

3) Why isn't he running his boss' company?

Something is rotten in Denmark (or Utah)...

Posted by: Spooky at July 21, 2004 10:31 PM

Oh and BTW, I hate to be too esoteric for you but, I have discovered a obtuse connection or link between Tortoro dolls and the LDS Church: Check out this Anime link where the Tortoro doll is sold:
http://www.animaxis.com/en/shop/product.asp?pf%5Fid=114395&sku=114395%2D00

There you will find the "black salamander" doll sold along side the Tortoro doll. All of you pro and anti-LDS Church followers know what I am speaking of here, don't you? Joesph Smith's 19th century "white salamander" (i.e. angel Moroni transfiguration) vision at the first so-called "gold plates" burial site at Cumorah hills near Palmyra, New York. This is a strange but surrendipitous discovery relating to Ken Jennings choice of occult good luck charm dolls and his uncanny "new gift" of wisdom.

If anyone remembers "Brother Smith" and his dad practiced the occult and believed in good luck charms too. That's how he wrote the Book of Mormon with his occult "seer stone". Do your Google searches if you doubt me...

God I hope I am stepping on toes here... STOMP!
