Random Penseur posts what has to be one of the fanciest last meals death row would ever see.
Of course, I doubt many of those who get themselves into positions where they are to be executed would have quite the refined taste he does. That's not to say that taste makes one a good person, but it does require education which tends to at least reduce the chance that you'll turn into a murderer.
Then again, there's always Hitler. In other words, RP is Hitler because he wants an artichoke vinaigrette at his last supper. Personally, I'd probably want some home-cooking like chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, fried okra, Texas toast, and beer. You know, comfort food. His more refined list does appeal to me, too, though—a gourmet repast before death, a final feast for the senses.
Like Hitler? A nice Jewish boy like me? I'm not sure about that at all, you know.
One other quibble, I never actually conceived of this as a death row kind of experience. We were thinking of it more like you know the world is going to end tomorrow, what would your last meal be.
I do agree with you that a chili cheeseburger and chili cheese fries are refined. :)
What's Texas Toast?
Heheh... it's a joke, since he was supposedly quite refined despite being Evil. As for the death row part, I guess that's just naturally what I think of when I hear "last meal". Must be living in Texas that does it. And "Texas toast" is a particularly thick, somewhat soft piece of toast. Nothing terribly special, but it's different from, say, what you'd have with breakfast.
Ok. I appreciate the clarification since I had no idea how I was going to explain that one to my mother. :)
I agree, by the way, that properly fried okra is a thing of beauty. And a thing of beauty is a joy forever.
a) It's worth clarifying that Texas Toast is always, always white bread. Who's Hitler now, huh?
b) Mallarme, your faux populism fools noone.
c) Who in their right mind would choose, if they had the option, anything other than a ton of booze for their last "meal"? Delicacies be damned, I just want to be insensible when they throw the switch.
It's not faux populism. It's a death bed repudiation of vegetarianism. :)
