Read it. What's the point? Always nice to read a level headed middle of the road article that links to the farthest left websites available. Onward (whatever god wants to call us)Soldiers!
Why didn't the writer of this essay, Karen, do what to the Christian right what she claims Jesus did? "Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do."
This woman defines Christian as pacifism. This is a bogus conception. Why didn't Christ chastize the centurion and tell him to stop being a soldier? This is silliness. She writes as the authority that defines Christ and then dismisses all the faithful. The isolating pride of this essay is staggering.
I think her central point stands--that the Religious Right have forgotten the traditional Christian identification with the poor and the oppressed as the inheritors of the earth. That the virtues of the meek--"love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, self control"--are being mocked by the imperialist nonsense the Religious Right believes justified by the Bible. That the association of the Religious Right with the defense industry and the military establishment is a disgrace. That there are plenty of Christians among the war protestors and there ought to be plenty more, if Christians took their own gospel seriously.
Meanwhile, you tell us that the Catholic voter has a duty to vote Bush and thus support the war machine. If this woman is overcome by "pride", don't you think it might be a gesture of "pride" to be making such assumptions?
