Congratulations Iraq

Despite the problems I have with the way it has been conducted and the very reasons for the war in Iraq, the turnout at today's elections clearly provides them and the rest of the world with an opportunity to hope that things are, in fact, improving significantly. Even though there were some attacks, the number of fatalities, though far above the desired zero, was much lower than many had anticipated while turnout was higher. How many Americans would go to vote if there were a substantial threat they might be killed by terrorists? So, congratulations Iraqi people. You demonstrated your courage and committment today. Let us hope there are no massive irregularities in the vote and that this is just one of many steps towards a stable and peaceful nation. Good luck.

Well said. All I have to go on are the Net slideshows, and they are full of inspiring images. Certainly, I wish certain members of the progressive community here in America were more optimistic about the process, about I suppose they have good reason to be skeptical. I just hope that there was some turnout in the Sunni regions and that there won't be too many accusations of fraud.

Let's hope this is the beginning of the end with regard to the occupation.

From what I understand the Sunnis didn't turn out as something of a protest. They've been in power so long that the idea of a truly democratic vote must just anger them or feel unfair. I imagine they'll get used to it, though. It's probably a bit like progressives living in Texas, to an extent. You feel like your vote just will not matter so you're discouraged from voting.
